Osprey Flyer, Volume XVIII, December Edition 2023

Our Osprey Garden

Greetings!

It is hard to believe that today is December 1st! Only four more months until our osprey return, and we will be ready for them. Our nest camera is up and running and I am learning how to operate it so I should be a pro by March! The camera will run 24/7 and will be accessible on YouTube and there will be a link on our website. A new platform will go up on Town Hill and will be installed after the first of the year. Thank you, Dominion Energy and Traffic Systems Technology, for your generosity and support.

I hope some of you will want to participate in Osprey Watch this year. This is a citizen science program administered by the Center for Conservation Biology. For those of you that are interested in participating, I would be happy to host a brief orientation and get you set up with the nest you would like to monitor. There is no shortage of nests, we have 50 plus sites right in the Town of Colonial Beach. For those of you that are not local but have ospreys in your community, I would be happy to help you out as well. Send me an email at admin@virginiaospreyfoundation.org.

We welcome Carolyn Rubinfeld, Watchable Biologist, at the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Carolyn has joined our festival team in an advisory capacity. Carolyn brings a wealth of knowledge and great ideas and we look forward to working with her.

Again, we ask that you let your voices be heard, osprey in the lower Chesapeake need your help. Read about over harvesting of menhaden and what you can do to help on our website at, Advocacy | The Virginia Osprey Foundation | Virginia Osprey Education & Advocacy
